Marsden’s history

Marsden is a village on Highway 40, just east of Wells Lake, in the Rural Municipality of Manitou Lake No. 442. It incorporated as a village on 24 April 1931. The name comes from Marsden, West Yorkshire, England, the birthplace of the wife of Alex F. Wright, the village's first postmaster.

The village gained notoriety shortly after 20 November 2008, when the Buzzard Coulee meteorite struck near Marsden.

Today Marsden is the host of the annual Quad War, a Society for Creative Anachronism event. It is a full-costume Renaissance and Middle Ages festival and war, usually held in the first week of August, and it draws about 500 people, mostly society members from Alberta and Saskatchewan. About four miles south-east of the village, Big Manitou Regional Park on Manitou Lake offers camping, golfing, ball diamonds and other activities.
